If the windows in your home are starting to get drafty, rattling, or you are noticing condensation on them frequently, it may be time for an upgrade. The good news is that upgrading your home’s windows can create great curb appeal, making a home look fresh and updated.
HOW TO TELL IF YOUR WINDOWS SHOULD BE REPLACED
If you notice any of the following, your windows may need to be replaced:
- Condensation or fogging of the windows;
- Rot or mold on or around the windows;
- Drafts coming from the windows;
- Cracked caulking around the windows.
Choosing New Windows
When looking into replacing your home’s windows, you can either retrofit the new windows into the existing window casings of your home, or you can strip out the windows and frames completely and start fresh. Typically, retrofitting is the cheaper option for window installation, but stripping and replacing the frames is usually more energy-efficient in the long run.
There are a number of types of windows you can get for your home, some of the common ones include:
Picture Windows
These have a large, dramatic shape which lets in lots of light and views. Because they are usually of a higher price point, this window type is usually used as a statement on a house and not in every room. These windows do not offer ventilation.
Bay Windows
These windows are made up of one large fixed window in the middle and a casement on either side. If you plan to install a bay window, a structural engineer should be consulted with first as they are often very heavy and may require additional support.
Casement Windows
Casement windows swing in and out, similar to a door, and can be operated with a crank handle. These windows offer a high level of ventilation and have a tight seal when they are closed. Casement windows are a great choice for hard to reach spots.
Double-Hung Windows
This window type consists of two sashes that move up and down. They are great for ventilation and can be suited to any home.
